Our Mission

The SwissWaterKiosk-Foundation has a clear mission: to create fair access to safe drinking water in developing countries. Our approach aims to support local market mechanisms where also the very poor have the chance to participate.

Worldwide two million people die every year due to the lack of safe drinking water. In this context over the last four years an innovative water disinfection system has been developed at the Swiss Institute for Solar Technologies (SPF). The system produces safe water and works completely self-sustained with the energy from the sun. It is well suited for small villages as a community service or in combination with schools, hospitals or private water vendors.

So far 11 pilot-systems have been implemented in 3 countries (Tanzania, Bangladesh and Mozambique). With our systematic approach we were able to gain experience on how to operate the water systems in different social settings. Based on this we have elaborated a 3-year plan for the first scaling up-phase:
Until 2014 we will install over 70 systems and supply over 20'000 people with safe water on a long term basis. For the financing of this first scaling-up phase we are until September 2011 in contact with potential "pioneer-donors".

The activities of the SwissWaterKiosk-foundation are targeted for high impact:

  • Improvement of health standard by creating access to safe water
  • Sustainable and adequate technology for water treatment
  • Concept with commercially self-sustained water kiosks (enabling fast multiplication)
